The much-awaited Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath commenced on June 27, 2025, in Puri, Odisha, with millions of devotees flooding the holy city to witness the divine chariot procession. Marking one of the largest and oldest religious festivals in India, this year's event was an awe-inspiring blend of ancient tradition, spiritual fervor, and meticulous planning.
The three grand wooden chariots—Nandighosh (Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra), and Darpadalana (Subhadra)—were ceremoniously pulled from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, signifying the deities’ annual journey to their aunt’s abode. The roads echoed with chants of “Jai Jagannath”, devotional songs, drumbeats, and the rhythmic pulling of the massive, ornately decorated chariots by thousands of volunteers.
A key ritual that preceded the procession was the ‘Chhera Pahara’, performed by the King of Puri (Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb), who swept the chariot decks with a golden broom, symbolizing humility and devotion. The spiritual aura intensified as devotees considered the act of pulling the chariots not just a service but a sacred path to salvation.
Unprecedented security measures were in place with over 10,000 personnel, NSG commandos, and CCTV surveillance ensuring safety. Drone monitoring, medical aid stations, and volunteer squads helped manage the massive crowd with efficiency.
This year’s Rath Yatra continues to be a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and unshakable faith, bringing together people from all walks of life in celebration of divine love and unity.
